July 5 2012
Early July I decided it was time to head South and spend some time with my family. Lauren and Amelia came with me. We got up early and were on the road by 6:15am on the 5th of July. Driving South I was delighted by the scenery that I have been exposed to all my life. Many times have I taken the route south. Memory upon memory overlapped of Dad driving down in the middle of the night and being the only other one awake, fires cutting the highway, Single lane in the old days, being subjected to never ending Manhatten Transfer (Birdland and Java Jive!) the Andrew Sisters. Heading to funerals of loved ones, heading to times with Cousins, weeks of a lazy summer, reconnecting. The rolling hills south of Goulburn with varying degrees of Drought or Flood, just the beauty of the Australian countryside. I remember thinking as I drove this time how exceptionally lucky I was to experience this drive in so many different conditions, with so many different members of my family. 900 odd kilometres of time to think, and drink in the Australian countryside. The landmark stops of yeseteryear now bypassed, Yass, Goulburn, but others remain (though not for long) Holbrook etc. This time we did not detour to Wangaratta or Glenrowan but in years gone by the walk up the streets where Ned Kelley last stood. The trip South just exciting, not being able to wait to see the loved ones at the other end, this time the Collings were our target. Therese waiting for us with a lovely meal, Darrens smile, Josie and Tillys love. We are so very lucky.
